The Simplest Approach to the Best Possible Design – The Motor

In case you thought the motor’s only job was to make sure the record rotates at the correct speed, think again: as the only source of energy for the signal generated by the cartridge—in short, the music we hear—it’s arguably the most important component of any record player.

The DG X’s motor system is derived from that developed for the flagship RG-1 Reference Motor Drive and is as sophisticated as it is innovative, yet it sits hidden away inside the main steel chassis. It incorporates a programmable microprocessor with a D/A converter to provide low distortion sine and cosine waves that are used to turn the motor. These signals are then amplified using two bridged-balanced amplifiers, which control every move of the motor to ensure a linear, smooth turning of the drive pulley.

The motor itself is a low voltage Precision Synchronous design, individually ‘tuned’ for the lowest noise by adjusting the microprocessor controls during manufacture.
A copper foil and a stainless-steel cover provide shielding to ensure the best possible performance.

The Platter

Drive to the platter is via a precision machined aluminium alloy pulley and a bespoke silicon rubber drive belt for smoothness and durability.
Electronic speed change is controlled via a switch to the rear of the plinth top-plate, eliminating the need for belt handling. The platter is also precision-machined alloy with a bonded PETG record interface mat. An aluminium alloy disc on the underside controls platter resonance, while a cork/Neoprene/nitrile disc protects the acrylic plinth.

The Main Bearing

The platter fits onto a super polished stainless-steel spindle that rides on a precision tungsten carbide ball in the high tolerance DG X main bearing housing.
The long-term lubricated bearing ensures longevity without the need for frequent re-lubrication. An optimised aluminium alloy bearing clamp enhances stability and performance, delivering lower noise, reduced rumble, and higher rotational stability.

The Tonearm

The Groove Runner X tonearm features a flat profile instead of a conventional tube, eliminating high Q resonances and the need for extra damping.
It uses Vertere Pulse internal wiring instead of a flexible PCB, a stainless-steel counterweight with azimuth adjustment screw, and a fine adjustment tracking weight.
This allows the arm’s effective mass to be matched perfectly to the cartridge for optimum performance.

Its upgraded Tri-Point bearing system—borrowed from the SG-1 tonearm—improves rigidity and responsiveness. The VTA can be precisely adjusted, and the detachable arm beam ensures safe transportation and effortless reinstallation.

The Plinth – Precision Crafted for Unmatched Performance

Featuring a three-layer sandwich construction of non-resonant cast acrylic, the DG X plinth is both aesthetically pleasing and performance-driven.
Functional features like the control button, speed indicator light, and standby mood lighting are seamlessly integrated. The sub-plinth is isolated from the main structure to reduce vibration and enhance audio fidelity.

A critically damped steel chassis provides stability and supports the motor and circuitry. Three adjustable feet ensure perfect levelling, and a sleek acrylic dust cover with integrated hinges finishes the elegant profile.
